سریلان اعلام کرده که برنامه‌ای برای کمک فوری به ۱۷ نفتکش ایرانی که در آب‌های بین‌المللی در نزدیکی سواحل خود درگیر شده‌اند، ندارد، در حالی که گزارش‌هایی از کمبود مواد غذایی، آب و سوخت وجود دارد. این نفتکش‌ها پس از محاصره دریایی توسط ناوگان آمریکا در تنگه هرمز، چندین ماه است که در این منطقه به سر می‌برند.
یک کارگر مهاجر 24 ساله سریلانکایی، آنوجان سیواراسا، در عربستان به اتهام توهین به پیامبر محمد از طریق یک پست در فیسبوک، به اعدام محکوم شد. سیواراسا پست را حذف و عذرخواهی منتشر کرد، اما اسکرین‌شات‌ها به کارفرما ارسال شد و منجر به دستگیری او در جولای شد. او ابتدا به پنج سال زندان و جریمه 3 میلیون ریال سعودی محکوم شده بود، اما دادستان‌ها درخواست دادند که پرونده بر اساس قوانین شریعه رسیدگی شود و دادگاه عالی در 17 سپتامبر حکم اعدام را صادر کرد. سریلان برای دریافت بخشش درخواست کرده است و رئیس جمهور آنورا کمار دیسانایکه وعده داده است که برای دریافت عفو و اعزام یک گروه حقوقی به عربستان اقدام کند.
سریلانکا می‌گوید یک کشتی ایرانی به نام بوشهر در حال حاضر در آب‌های بین‌المللی نزدیک مرز دریایی این کشور است و دولت حداکثر کمک را برای حفاظت از سرنشینان آن ارائه می‌دهد. پیش از این، یک زیردریایی آمریکایی ناوچه ایرانی IRIS Dena را در نزدیکی سریلانکا غرق کرد.
معاون وزیر امور خارجه سریلانکا اعلام کرد که در حمله اژدر زیردریایی آمریکایی به ناوچه نیروی دریایی ایران IRIS Dana در سواحل سریلانکا، حداقل ۸۰ نفر کشته شده‌اند.
ناوچه نیروی دریایی ایران، آیریس دنا، پس از حمله هوایی منتسب به آمریکا، در سواحل سریلانکا غرق شد و نیروهای سریلانکا کشتی‌ها و هواپیماهای خود را برای نجات ۳۰ ملوان این ناوچه مستقر کردند.
